Pianoteq is no slouch either - the guts are there as long as you’re willing to get in there and tweak the settings. We think Keyscape takes the cake from an authenticity standpoint, but as a creative writing tool, Hammers & Waves also has a lot to offer as well. There’s a quick rundown of some different VST Rhodes sounds. Rhodes in reality has a huge tonal variety depending on how loud you're playing.īut, if you spend some time with Tremolo and Drive, you can get a decent Rhodes sound going on here. The limitation here is the lack of sample layers, being the variety of tone you get across different dynamic ranges is limited. If you were in a pinch, this patch is going to work. With some tweaking, you can get some really authentic, gritty-sounding Rhodes going in here, it just requires a bit of effort on your behalf. Pianoteq is going for the same thing as Keyscapes, but in this case, the sound is entirely modeled, meaning every aspect of the sound is synthesized, and you as the user are then given access to all of those syntheses parameters. This comes as close as software can get to put you in front of a real Rhodes. The classic Rhodes bark really comes through here. For people seeking the highest level of authenticity, it doesn’t get better than Keyscapes.Īnd in this case, there are actually several different Rhodes patches to choose from instead of just one. There are a lot fewer synthesis parameters, but instead, there’s a plethora of recording permutations and on-board effects permutations available to you. This Rhodes most closely resembles the Hammers & Waves Rhodes, but then gets into a whole different world due to how authentically they record their instruments. The strengths of the VST are all of the different presets, a good variety of tonal colours, and the fact that the core sound has been recorded really well. There’s really a ton you can do with this patch. Then, you can get into some extremely cool modulation and effects engines. From there, you’ve got a lot of control over editing the sound here with access to a number of parameters, and there’s a selection of really good presets The base Rhodes sound without any modulation is warm and intimate. This patch is part of a 10 instrument pack from Hammers & Waves (check out our video on their acoustic patches.) What we have here is a nicely sampled 1973 Rhodes, that is then fed into Hammers & Waves modulation and synthesis engine that allows for a massive amount of variety of textures.
